Atari continues to tease with their upcoming “console.” The legendary company first teased gamers with its Ataribox at E3 this year, promising a brand new product. On a 20-second Youtube video, Atari revealed that the console would be housed in wood, like the Atari 2600.
In an email addressed to Atari fans, the company stated that their “objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.” The new console features ribbed lines, a raised back, and a front panel that can be either glass or wood. Indicator lights glow through these materials, and Atari is including SD card support, an HDMI port, and four USB ports.
Photos below are the two versions of the Ataribox, one in wood, and one in black/red.
Atari also mentioned that “while [they] will be delivering classic gaming content, [they] will also be delivering current gaming content.” Based on this, we may speculate that classic games could be played via emulators. And with the recent success of the NES mini, they will probably compete with the upcoming Super NES Classic Edition. Lastly, we also speculate that it will use Android OS for its current game content since there is no cartridge port.
Beyond the few details given and its use of “PC technology,” there is no other information available for hardware, software details, price, launch date, and distribution deals.
Atari is obviously teasing. Expect to see more of these teasers in the future.
