Video game dads: some wear superhero capes. Some wear disappointments.
Today is the perfect time for showing appreciation for our dads. Their sacrifices and devotion to us are unmatched. But not everybody is lucky enough to have a father figure. In fact, so many video game characters out there have father issues. So in honor of Father’s Day, we celebrate every dad in video games. Here are the best and worst video game dads:
Best Dad: Harry Mason (Silent Hill)
Harry’s my favorite video game dad. Who in their right mind would travel the treacherous, demonic place called Silent Hill? He is the adoptive father of Cheryl, and he spends his time trying to find his missing daughter.
During his search, he discovers that she was kidnapped by demonic creatures. There are different endings to the game that affect their relationship. But in the end, I salute any guy that can walk in a foggy, dark, ghost town filled with monsters to search for his daughter.
Worst Dad: Bowser (Mario Bros. Series)
Father of Bowser Jr. and young Koopalings. He let his kids (YES, KIDS!) run pirate ships with cannons and other deadly weaponry. Not only that, the guy does not even consider them his own. It was later confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto that in the “current story” they are not his. But still, not exactly father material.
Best Dad: Ethan Mars (Heavy Rain)
“Jason, Jason!!” Typically, when a video games’ protagonist is a father, they usually end up saving their family from evil and disaster. This guy, Ethan Mars, is the most unlucky father of all. He experienced being electrocuted, drove the freeway the wrong way, amputated his finger and drank poison.
He did all of that just to save his son Jason from the hands of the Origami Killer. The motive of the Origami Killer? It is not about money. He just wanted to find a good father who would do whatever it takes to save their kids. What a jerk!
Worst Dad: Heihachi Mishima (Tekken Series)
Father of Kazuya, he threw his son off a cliff just to toughen him up. He also threw him down a volcano out of anger (What a bastard). In addition to throwing Kazuya, he also encouraged him to make a deal with the devil. If that wasn’t enough, he used his grandson as an experiment. All of this for the sake of his dark and evil business.
Best Dad: John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)
Out of all the gun-toting cowboys, John Marston is the most honorable. On his countryside adventure, John encounters numerous trials and tribulations. There were a lot of times that he could cheat on his wife, but Marston stays loyal to his family. In fact, his entire quest is to return to a quiet life in his farm to be with his wife, as well as raise his son. The father and son relationship between them is the main plot of Red Dead Redemption.
Worst Dad: The King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series)
The game’s plot is about a prince on a mission to rebuild stars, moon, and constellations, which were accidentally destroyed by a binge drinking father, the King of All Cosmos. See, it’s your fault, your highness. Why send your son to fix your mess?
That’s it for this year’s best and worst dads. Think you can add more dads to our list? Leave us a comment!
Happy Father’s day to all the dads out there!
