Fear Effect, the cel-shaded action-adventure game from the 90s will get a remake.
It’s been 17 years since the launch of the original game, and now it’s being resurrected by indie developer Sushee as Fear Effect Reinvented. Sushee is also the studio behind Fear Effect Sedna, a real-time tactics game.
The first teaser for Fear Effect Reinvented shows Sushee retaining the first game’s unique visual style. We can see some upgrades on Fear Effect’s celebrated cel-shaded graphics, fixed camera angles and atmosphere of the original title.
Fear Effect Reinvented is part of Square Enix’s Collective initiative, where the publisher works with indie developers, by either helping to build community, raising funds via Kickstarter or with support for releasing games. Sushee successfully pitched their idea for Fear Effect Sedna, but after it was announced it became clear that there was a strong demand for a remake of the original.
In an interview with GameIndustry.biz, the people behind Sushee explained that this remake is looking to the Fear Effect fandom community for guidance. Forever Entertainment joins the studio to help with the project.
One thing has always been clear with Square Enix, if the reception was enthusiastic enough, we could imagine doing everything with this license and it included remaking the old episodes. We said this to the community quickly after the announcement of Sedna and today we are very happy to say that it’s thanks to the fan’s support that everyone will be able to play, on every platform, this old classic in its new shape.
The original game was developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive for the PlayStation. A prequel was released one year later titled Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix.
Fear Effect Reinvented is coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC through Steam in 2018.
