Hearthstone’s next expansion, Knights of the Frozen Throne, will launch this August. It introduces another 135 cards and new card abilities. One of the new abilities is “lifesteal,” a common mechanic in many video games that heals players based on the damage that it does. There are also Legendary Hero cards which replace your character with a modified Death Knight version when played.
But of all the new Legendary Hero cards, there are two goofy cards that garner attention.
Blizzard introduced Archbishop Benedictus, a seven-mana Priest minion that will steal your opponent’s entire deck. It’s not clear how reliable Benedictus will be in competitive play since you’re just gambling on your own deck with cards that don’t synergize well. It could avoid fatigue but Elise The Trailblazer could be better, especially with Shadow Visions.
“I like your deck. I think I will take it!” It could be fun to watch this card in action.
If you like Warlocks and discarding cards, then this card is perfect for you. There are fairly obvious synergies here, with classic cards like Doomguard and Soulfire all the way up to Malchezaar’s Imp, Silverware Golem, and Clutchmother Zavas as payoffs.
Discard Warlock is supposed to be a high risk, high reward mechanic and this card fits perfectly. The most powerful part about this card is the lifesteal, especially in Warlock which needs healing to synergize with your hero power.
Let’s hope that discard decks will become viable this time.
In addition to new cards, the new expansion includes new single-player content which the previous expansion does not have. Completing the prologue will net you a random Legendary Hero card while finishing each wing will also get you a card from the expansion. If you make your way through the end, you’ll also obtain a card pack.
No More Duplicates
With side by side criticisms for its increasingly high cost (three expansions/year) and low legendary drop rates, Blizzard finally came up with a solution.
Hearthstone director Ben Brode announced a number of major changes when it comes to pack-opening in Hearthstone. A primary change to pack-opening guarantees that players will no longer receive duplicate Legendaries from packs, starting from the next expansion launch.
“Opening a legendary should be exciting,” said Hearthstone game director Ben Brode in a video about the news. “We think this change should make it consistently better.”
Brode pointed out that if you craft a legendary using dust from cards you’ve disenchanted, you’re guaranteed to not open that same legendary in a pack. This should allow players to craft the legendaries without hesitations and fear like they wasted their dust, money or time.
Knights of the Frozen Throne is the sixth expansion to Hearthstone. It features the tenth new card set with 135 collectible cards and the new Arthas Menethil hero. The expansion is planned for release in early to mid-August.
