The Striker Lucian Skin was released 3 years ago. And now, the court has ordered Riot to fork over all proceeds from the sale of the skin in the Netherlands to former professional soccer player Edgar Davids. Davids has sued Riot, saying that the skin was based on his likeness.
According to a report, Riot argued that the similarities between the character skin and Davids are not striking (pun not intended) and that the players would not see the resemblance. However, the Dutch court does not agree.
Notably, both the champion skin and Davids share a few things in common such as skin color, hairstyle, and physique. They even sport similar eyewear. In addition, the Striker Lucian skin is of a soccer theme and Davids used to be a pro soccer player.
The character skin was released in 2014 along with other soccer themed skins. A Riot skins designer even explicitly mentioned in a tweet that the skin was indeed inspired by Davids. The tweet has since been deleted but can still be viewed from the internet archive.
For those not familiar with League of Legends, skins are cosmetic upgrades for the game’s characters. Skins allow the character to sport a different look. They have no efffect on the gameplay.
With this development, do you think we might see an increase in the number of lawsuits against Riot pertaining to skin likeness? What other character skins do you think share a likness with other well-known people and characters?
